Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil derived from the mesocarp (reddish pulp) of the fruit of the oil palms. It is naturally reddish in color because of a high beta-carotene content. Palm mesocarp oil is 49% saturated, while palm kernel oil is 81% saturated fats. However, crude red palm oil that has been refined, neutralized, bleached and deodorized, a common commodity called RBD (refined, bleached, and deodorized) palm oil, does not contain carotenoids. The palm oil is used in food manufacturing, in beauty products, and as biofuel.

Quality control-monitoring and testing are important in ensuring the quality of palm oil.  The quality control parameters are used to judge the quality of palm oil products and it can be monitored and tested to ensure that the palm oil is not deliberately or accidentally adulterated. Improved viscosity of palm oils stored in tanks for optimized pumping, pouring and flowing in production processes – counteracting fluctuating ambient temperatures.

Temperature plays an important role in oil pipeline design. To ensure optimum yields and productive use it is important to maintain oil temperatures to avoid oil thickening and provide rapid heating for processing and melting. Heat tracing system is used on the transfer pump, pipeline, and service tank to establish the correct liquid viscosity of the oil reducing wastage to a minimum.

How A Pipe Heat Tracing System Works

Long pipeline heating is necessary for viscosity control, and temperature maintenance of transfer lines between processing plants, storage tanks and transportation facilities. When thermal insulation alone is not sufficient, then the pipeline needs heating. Long line heating Cable is mainly used for long distance pipe line. This pipe heating cable is for environment in which where the temperature of a transmitting fluid should be maintained warmly to smoothen the flow.

When the fluid in the pipeline becomes too viscous and begins to solidify, operations may be halted. To maintain a consistent flow of temperature sensitive fluids by pipeline, it is important to consider a solution that combines the proper heating system and advanced analytical software to provide real-time performance updates on the pipelines’ operational performance.

A pipe heat tracing system consists of an electrical heating tape that is attached to pipes. The electrical heat tracing is powered by electricity and by converting electricity, the desired heat is generated. Through the conversion of electricity into thermal energy (heat), hot water pipes, for example, are kept at temperature or liquids are protected from freezing.

Apical’s Palm Oil plant in Dumai Indonesia, PT. Sari Dumai Oleo (PT. SDO) required a heating solution for their newly constructed 800 meters export 10-inch pipeline to the jetty. The fluid is Hydrogenated Refined Palm Stearine which is required to maintain the temperature at 70°C to ensure the fluid did not solidify during the export process to the vessel. Due to long-line heating, the biggest challenge is to propose a suitable heat trace cable that can cater to the required maintenance temperature and maintain the quality. Dpstar offers Chromalox Series Constant Wattage (SCW) cables with some design engineering modifications that suit the requirement. With the SCW excellent and proven installation record in other regions, Dpstar managed to convince Apical despite the product launched by Chromalox about 5 years in the market.

Kudos to our project team on the successful completion of the design, engineering, installation, and commissioning of the electrical heat trace system, PLC panel, power cables, cable trays, and site supervision for the palm oil tank farm to jetty in Indonesia. With the Chromalox reputation in electrical heat trace systems combined with Dpstar products and specialize more than 30 years in electrical-based heaters, we managed to offer comprehensive solutions to customer needs at competitive cost and delivery. Dpstar has developed systems for the extremely precise transportation of media that demand a particular temperature. We install heat tracing components on the pipes as the work progresses to ensure that process, fluid, or material temperatures within pipes and piping systems are maintained above ambient temperatures during static flow conditions for the smooth and efficient running of the process plant and equipment. A high-performance trace heating system allows an operator to minimize non-productive shut-down times by ensuring efficient warm-up, maintaining the temperature of the line above a critical wax/hydrate level, or slowing cool-down.  The heat trace systems are controlled with temperature sensors that provide feedback to the PLC controller.  These systems will control and adjust the temperature of the heat trace to assist the user in observing power output.
