1. Reverse Osmosis – Isolation / Signal Splitting

Purpose: Reverse osmosis purifies water by removing larger particles, ensuring safe drinking water.

Importance: Accurate measurements of flow, pressure, and temperature are essential for effective operation.

Challenges: Achieving precise measurements in dynamic conditions, pressure variations, and chemical compatibility.

Solutions:

The technology works by using a high-pressure pump to increase the pressure on the salt side of a reverse osmosis membrane, forcing water through the membrane while almost all (approximately 95% to 99%) of dissolved salts remain behind in the reject steam. The more concentrated the feed water, the more pressure is required to overcome the osmotic pressure.

In a reverse osmosis system, measurements like flow, pressure, and temperature are necessary, and in this case, all are measured with two-wire transmitters. The output signals from these transmitters are connected to a local control panel and the main PLC. The PR 3109 isolated converter / splitter is an excellent solution that powers the two-wire transmitters and provides high isolation between input and both outputs. This is a great replacement solution for older systems where one input is repeated using an extra analog output on the PLC. Our solution results in increased signal accuracy with super-fast response time and the spare PLC analog output channels are now available for other tasks.

2. Multimedia Filter – Isolation / Conversion

Challenges: Accurate pressure readings in varying flow rates, preventing clogging, and system efficiency.

Solutions:

As the water flows through the media, solids are trapped, increasing head pressure and decreasing flow. Eventually, the flow drops to a point where the filter must be cleaned. A differential pressure transmitter is used to measure when the backwash should be initiated.

The DP transmitter is powered, measured, and isolated by the PR 9116A universal converter. The 9116A can detect any error on the 4…20 mA input signal and set a relay contact output. The 9116A can convert an active DP transmitter to a passive 4…20 mA output signal.

3. Clarified Water Storage Tank – Level Alarms

Purpose: Storing water from clarifiers for controlled supply.

Importance: Maintaining proper water levels prevents overflow or underfilling.

Challenges: Accurate level measurement for alarms, preventing false alerts, and interfacing with control systems.

Requirements: Radar transmitters, level switches, and indicators for precise control.

Solutions:

The water level is measured with a two-wire radar transmitter connected to a 4116 universal transmitter with the PR 4510 display / programming front attached.

The two alarm relays are connected to a digital input card using on and off delay settings in the 4116. The 4…20 mA signal from the sensor is converted to a 0…10 VDC signal for an analog input card on the PLC. With its high isolation and flexible AC or DC power supply, the 4116 is the logical choice here.

4. Soft Water Tank – Galvanic Isolation

Purpose: Storing chemically softened water for various applications.

Importance: Accurate water level measurements ensure availability.

Challenges: Precise level detection in chemically active environments, noise immunity, and galvanic isolation.

Requirements: Pressure transmitters with isolation and retransmission capabilities.

Solutions:

A pressure transmitter is used to measure the water level in the tank. The transmitter is powered by a PR 3104 isolated converter and the signal is converted to 0…10 VDC and retransmitted to the PLC, with the added benefit of galvanic isolation and strong noise immunity.

5. WAC DC Softeners – Linearization

Purpose: Softening hard water by ion exchange for improved quality.

Importance: Monitoring pH value to optimize the softening process.

Challenges: Accurate pH measurements in chemically reactive environments, signal linearization.

Requirements: Programmable transmitters with linearization.

In this process, monitoring of the pH value in the post acid feed pump is very important in order to ensure an effective softening process. To monitor the pH post acid feed pump, a pH sensor is connected to a PR 5116B programmable transmitter. The pH signal is linearized by configuring a multipoint linearization in the device configuration software, PReset. The 0…10 VDC output from the PR 5116B is connected to the DCS or PLC.

6. Filter Press Building – Noise Isolation

Purpose: Separating solids from water using pressure.

Importance: Accurate pressure and flow measurements for efficient filtration.

Challenges: Noise interference from VFDs affecting measurement accuracy.

Requirements: Noise-immune repeaters and power supplies.

Solutions:

To optimize the process, control of the constant flow pumps is done through a PLC which requires input from a pressure transducer and a flow meter. Ultimately, the PLC controls a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) on the pump motor.

Both the pressure transducer and the flow meter are two-wire styled units. Due to noise from the VFD, a robust, noise immune measurement system is needed. In this application, one double channel PR 5104A repeater / power supply is used providing high 3.75 kV isolation and fast response time.

7. Sludge Holding Tank – Level Measurement

Purpose: Dewatering sludge for efficient treatment.

Importance: Continuous level monitoring for volume control.

Challenges: Accurate level measurement in viscous media, pump control.

Requirements: Ultrasonic level transmitters and programmable indicators.

Solutions:

In the sludge holding tank, sludge from the filter press is dewatered by gravity, which minimizes the volume of the sludge thereby reducing the required size and capacity of subsequent treatment processes and equipment. Sludge pumping requires equipment that can keep viscous media moving — without becoming clogged.

An ultrasonic level transmitter is installed to perform continuous level measurement for uninterrupted monitoring of sludge volume. A simple on/off pump control function is accomplished by using the PR 5715D programmable LED indicator with four relay outputs. The 4…20 mA signal from the PR 5715D is re-transmitted to the control system.

8. Chemical Softening System – Level Measurement

Purpose: Treating wastewater with chemicals to enhance quality.

Solutions:

Level measurements are performed by using a 2-wire pressure transmitter with diaphragm seal. Temperature measurements are performed by using several temperature sensors which are wired to PR 5337D 2-wire transmitters with HART protocol. These transmitters make it possible to measure the temperature sensors in hazardous areas. Signals from both the pressure transmitter and the temperature transmitters are directed back to the safe area using the PR 9106B HART transparent repeater.

9. Water Recycle Tank – Level Measurement

Purpose: Storing excess wastewater during heavy rain.

Importance: Avoiding tank overflow and maintaining water balance.

Challenges: Accurate level measurement, overflow protection.

Requirements: Pressure transmitters, level switches, and converters.

The tank level measurement is done with a pressure transmitter and overflow protection is accomplished by means of two tank level switches. Both level switches are connected to the double-channel PR 9202B pulse isolator and the active mA signal from the level transmitter is connected to the PR 9113B temperature / mA converter.

The output signals from the PR 9202B and PR 9113B are connected to the control system. This solution also eliminates any potential ground loop issues because the field devices are not directly connected to a non-isolated input card.

10. Forced Draft Degasification – Level Measurement

Purpose: Removing dissolved gases from water.

Importance: Level switch for pump protection.

Challenges: Reliable level detection in a clear well.

Requirements: Level switch, solenoid driver, and isolator.

To protect the downstream pump, a level switch in the clear well is necessary. This application is solved using a level switch and a makeup valve on the ion exchange system. The level switch is connected to the PR 9202B Pulse isolator, which is measured by the control system. An output from the control system activates PR 9203B Solenoid / alarm driver, which controls the makeup valve.

This application is IS/Ex due to the presence of flammable gases. The PR electronics solution provides high isolation and also the possibility of using the 4510 for test of the system.

11. Influent Line – Flow Measurement

Purpose: Monitoring incoming flow from sewers.

Importance: Accurate flow data for regulatory compliance.

Electromagnetic flow meters are installed for full pipe flow measurement. The flow meters are connected directly to the PR 4116 universal transmitter with the PR 4510 display / programming front attached.

The PR 4116 delivers a precise transfer of the signal to the control system and the PR 4510 the opportunity for a 100% digital process calibration eliminating zero and span calibration pots and also actual process values indication.
