What is Thermocouple Cable?

Temperature is one of the most important units of measurement that industries monitor. It is extremely imperative that the temperature be as accurate as possible. If it is not managed correctly it can result in poorer quality items. A great smelling perfume, now smells ordinary, food may have a different flavor or in the medical field mismanagement of temperature can result in being unable to use donated items, such as blood.

A thermocouple is a commonly used sensor for measuring temperature. The wire and cable for thermocouples and temperature sensors are a vital part of the construction, as they complete the circuit between the thermocouple and the RTD controller. Essentially, this is what carries the signal from the thermocouple to the RTD which converts the temperature into an accurate reading. The outer insulation around the thermocouple cable as well as some single conductors are color-coded for easy identification.

What is the Difference Between a Thermocouple Grade Cable and an Extension Grade Cable?

Thermocouple grade cable is a cable that is used to make the sensing point of the instrument. Extension grade cable is only used to extend a thermocouple signal from a probe back to the instrument reading the signal.

What is Thermocouple Cable Insulated With?

There are many different types of insulation available, all with their own benefits:

  • Fiberglass Insulated Thermocouple Cable – moisture resistant and can withstand moderate abrasion
  • PFA Insulated Thermocouple Cable – good resistance to moisture, oil, and chemicals
  • TFE Insulated Thermocouple Cable – low friction coefficient, in addition to being resistant to moisture, oil, and certain chemicals
  • FEP Insulated Thermocouple Cable – resistant against abrasion, chemicals, moisture, nicking, and flame.
  • PVC Insulated Thermocouple Cable – weather, oil, liquid, and chemical resistant, and flame retardant.
  • Ceramaflex Insulated Thermocouple Cable – provides the highest amount of thermal protection without sacrificing flexibility and abrasion resistance
