This system employs a pressure difference across a barrier to control smoke movement. The pressurization systems are installed mainly in the stairwells, elevator shafts, refuge spaces and other egress routes. The high-pressure side of the barrier is either the refuge area or an exit route.

For stairwells in taller shopping malls & buildings, keeping escape and rescue routes free from smoke is an essential requirement for maintaining viable evacuation and firefighting options, even over longer periods of time. When Do You Need Stairwell Pressurization?

As alluded to above, we commonly see stairwell pressurization systems utilized in high-rise buildings. However, just because the building meets the definition of a high-rise, it does not necessarily imply that every stairwell, or any stairwell for that matter, is required to be provided with stairwell pressurization.

The code simply requires that every exit stair serving floors more than 75 feet above the lowest level of fire department access shall be a ‘smoke proof enclosure.’ For example, stairs serving only a couple of stories within a high-rise building would not be required to satisfy the requirements for a ‘smoke proof enclosure.’ Similarly, for underground buildings, every stairway serving floor levels more than 30 feet below the ‘level of exit discharge’ would also require a smoke proof enclosure, with one method being stairwell pressurization.

Dpstar have recently installed and commissioned a live stairwell pressurisation system for project MERDEKA TOWER 118 to ensure safe evacuation of the project workforce in the event of a fire. Pressure differential systems are designed to protect escape routes and fire-fighting shafts. This is achieved by limiting the spread of smoke from one space within a building to another through leakage paths or open door

If the doors towards the protected space are closed, a pressure differential system offers the facility of maintaining tenable conditions in the protected space by creating a (relative) higher pressure within the protected space. If the pressure differential is too low, smoke may ingress the protected space. If the pressure is too high, the force required to open any doors towards within the escape route may be too high.

In case of (simultaneous) open doors, the pressure differential system must be designed to create a minimum air velocity over the area of the open doors to prevent smoke from entering the protected space. To achieve this air velocity, the air supply fan to the protected space must supply sufficient airflow over the sum of the open door areas.

When a door to the protected space opens, the pressure in the protected space will suddenly drop. Using a fast response system the pressure differential system is activated and the supply rate is increased for the required minimum air velocity over the open door(s). With an air release path in the accommodation, it can be guaranteed that the air velocity over the open doors can be maintained in case the door to the accommodation with the fire is also opened. Pressure differential systems are designed to hold back smoke at a leaky physical barrier in a building, such as a door (either open or closed) or other similarly restricted openings.

These systems are intended to protect means of escape such as stairwells, corridors, lobbies, as well as systems intended to provide a protected firefighting bridgehead for the Fire Services
