What is an air handling unit (AHU)?

Each cleanroom requires a powerful air-handling system to manufacture pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, semiconductors, and healthcare products. An air handling unit (AHU) is a device used to condition and circulate air as part of a heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. An air handling unit (AHU) is a device that controls the temperature, humidity, and pressure of controlled environments. As part of the HVAC system, it acts as a high-capacity air handling unit, facilitating the movement and air-conditioning of clean rooms. 304 stainless steel construction with a filter system, back-blowing fan, and cooling unit helps to air-condition fresh air into the clean room.

AHUs can be simple or complex, depending on the needs of the cleanroom. Simple AHUs consist of a HEPA filter, a heating coil, a cooling coil, and a fan to push air through the unit. More complex AHUs also contain a sound attenuator, return fan, relief air section, humidifier, and intakes for outside air, and a discharge plenum.

Main functions of an AHU

In addition to managing the proper ventilation of the interior with outside air, the AHU performs other functions:

  • Filtration and control of the quality of the air that will reach the interior and depending on the retention of these filters, the air will be clean.

Our client wanted to upgrade the existing system HVAC for local use if the remote is down. The project required Dpstar’s solution to monitor AHU behavior by giving data parameters through Modbus configuration and using PLC as a gateway to communicate with SCADA. AHU systems are part of HVAC systems, which provide free hygienic air to rooms. Air is re-circulated as a part of ventilation and also helps in energy saving and management. The aim of the project is to automate the air handling process to the room, with the help of PLC programming done in ladder logic. AHU screen is developed in SCADA, monitoring, and controlling processing parameters (temperature, humidity, air velocity, pressure, etc..) as per the set point with the use of PID control, and VFD drives are done in real-time. Along with that safety precautions like motor safety, emergency stop, are also easily monitored in SCADA. A graphical view of the process is observed and recorded.

We installed a Vaisala RH/Temperature sensor on the return ducting AHU (air handling unit) for Texas Instrument Philippine HVAC system for their clean room. Vaisala is used together with Shimaden controller to control the heater as output to stabilize the humidity in AHU. We also modified programs to add new I/O tags for the existing programs and supplied new analog cards for Siemens PLC.

From the project, we conclude that air handling systems with SCADA monitoring are effective.  It is easy to control the system through SCADA. Integration of PID controller in the PLC is accurate maintenance of target value reached. Due to the higher priority given to humidity, it indirectly controls the temperature.
